The Don't Txt & Drive Interactive Challenge

Last September, the American Journal of Public Health released a five-year study that showed texting and driving caused more than 16,000 road fatalities between 2002 and 2007. With the increased use of smart phones and text messaging, this statistic is anticipated to rise. Furthermore, for teenagers with minimal driving experience, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

To help raise awareness and understanding of this serious issue in Florida, Orthodontist Derek M. Busciglio has partnered with local businesses and rivvid.com to create this interactive game that demonstrates the difficulty in texting while driving.

An important message from a Don't Txt & Drive sponsor, Dr. Derek M. Busciglio:

"While technology is making our lives more convenient, we must learn to use it responsibly. Texting is a visual, manual, and cognitive distraction that takes your eyes off the road, hands off the wheel, and mind off driving. It's important to educate and remind everyone, not just teenagers, to avoid this dangerous behavior behind the wheel in order to make our roadways safer."
